The topic of this item came up in the Yahoo Groups Bionicfans forum and I thought it might be of interest to some of you who read this blog:
I have actually owned 3 of these over an extremely short period of time.
The first one I had was bought when they were new on shelves. We took it home and I opened it and started playing with it and it broke within an hour or so. The part inside that would move the movies forward when you cranked the handle broke, so we took it back and exchanged it for a new one. Before going home we stopped at my grandparents house and while we were there I opened it and started playing with it and it broke again. Same problem. We took it back and got something else. I don't remember what.
Flash forward to the early 90's and I find an ad in "Toy Shop" magazine for a "Bionic Video Center" for sale mint in box. Called them, ordered it, sent my money, and got back an item that was NOT mint in box. I was (and am) pretty picky, but this item had been played with, with the stickers attached and fraying in places, a bit dirty, and missing the interior card board that holds the toy in place. I called the dealer, told him I was upset, sent it back and was issued a refund.
I've owned 3 and you can count on 1 hand the number of days I owned all 3 combined.
As far as toys go, it was a bit of a one trick pony. I remember putting my doll in the little chair so he could watch movies of himself, but even then, I knew my interest wouldn't last. It only came with one movie cartridge and it wasn't like I could just drive over to Sears and buy the rest of them. Even if I did, it wouldn't have added that much interest in the end. It's just as well that they kept breaking.
